Description

This knife is extremely fun to fidget with and hard to put down. The thumb flipper makes for easy and addictive opening action. Included on plate 2 of the print profile is a plastic bladed version in case you want to use this as a fidget toy only. Depending on which one you build, you will need different hardware.

Parts List

Utility blade version:

  • 4x M3x16mm cap machine screws (others can be used but part is designed to lay flush with this style of screw, link after description)
  • 2x M3x4mm cap machine screws
  • 6x M3 Nuts
  • 1x Standard utility blade
  • 6x 6x3mm Magnets

Bladeless Version

  • 4 x M3x16mm cap machine screws
  • 4x M3 Nuts
  • 3x 6x3mm Magnets (you can use 6 if you want but it is not necessary because there will be no metal blade for the magnet to attract to when the knife is closed.)

Reference the photos for hinge orientation when building. Nuts fit tight in hinge parts and blade side of knife, may require a bit of force to secure. if your having trouble, try flipping the nut around. Be sure to glue the magnets in place and let completely dry before using or else they will come loose. Also make sure that opposing magnets attract and not repel each other.

Printed with 100% infill with supports on. I have painted the few areas that need support in the profile.

Printed out nicely and with no issues using standard bbl pla basic. I have put it together using spare M3 screews and locking nuts I had. Came out suprisingly sturdy. No flex at all. Fun to use and play with. Using 6x3mm magnets is an overkill in my case. 6x2 or 5x2 would be plenty strong if they are decent quality. I would put two modifications in the design. #1 Nest magnets maybe 0.5mm deeper in holes to prevent hitting edge of the blade on magnets when closing (depends on blade U have). #2 Modify that thumb spike for opening the blade so it can be olso used to close single handed.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! I had the same thought about recessing the magnets across from the blade a bit also. I never thought of modifying the flipper spike though. Probably because the way I fidget with it, you'll see in the .gif that I close it one handed by using the hinge and was thinking of modifying that so it's easier to get a purchase on. That only works when holding it inverted though. I'll definitely be posting mods to this knife as well as other knife designs.

I figured out how to close the blade one handed with my thumb in normal grip. Just need to pull on the hinge that is in most forward position. Can't do it in reverse grip like you do. Magnets I used are too strong 😄

looks great, I printed it with Petg and it works good. it would be nice if there was an easier way to close it, also, it would be cool if you made a sheath for the blade so if it comes open in your pocket or bag it wouldn’t cut you, also great job. 👍

if you just switch your printer in Bambu Studio from Carbon X1 to A1 it should slice and print fine
