Description

In music theory, the circle of fifths (sometimes also cycle of fifths) is a way of organizing pitches as a sequence of perfect fifths.

Starting on a C, and using the standard system of tuning for Western music (12-tone equal temperament), the sequence is: C, G, D, A, E, B, F♯/G♭, C♯/D♭, G♯/A♭, D♯/E♭, A♯/B♭, F, and C. This order places the most closely related key signatures adjacent to one another.

What is the Circle of Fifths?

The Circle of Fifths is a visual representation of the 12 tones of the chromatic scale, arranged in a circular pattern. It shows the relationships between chords, keys, and scales.

How to Use the Circle of Fifths to Write Songs

1. Key Selection

Start by choosing a key for your song. Find the key on the Circle of Fifths. The keys on either side of your chosen key are closely related and can be used to create harmonically rich chord progressions.

2. Chord Progressions

Use the Circle of Fifths to find chords that fit within your key. Move clockwise for a sense of tension and counterclockwise for resolution. Experiment with different chord progressions to find the perfect fit for your song.

3. Modulation

Want to add some surprise to your song? Use the Circle of Fifths to modulate to a new key. Move 3-4 steps clockwise or counterclockwise to find a new key that will add some excitement to your song.

4. Scale Selection

Choose a scale that fits your key and song style. The Circle of Fifths can help you find the relative minor or major scale, as well as other modes and scales.

5. Experimentation

Don't be afraid to experiment! The Circle of Fifths is a tool to help you write songs, but it's not a rulebook. Try out new chord progressions, scales, and keys to find the unique sound that sets your song apart.

Conclusion:

The Circle of Fifths is an incredibly powerful tool for songwriters. By understanding how to use it, you'll unlock new possibilities for your music and take your songwriting to the next level!

Thank you! Print was no problem. Now I must practice, that's the bigger problem...

Great job, I really love the concept! For the next version, I’d suggest reinforcing the sliding grid to make it sturdier. Also, deepening the groove in the circular gauge would be a big help to prevent it from popping out so easily. With these small tweaks to the stability, it would be perfect!

Nice. The slider is pretty thin and flexible at 50% So if you want to print one that's slightly smaller, you might want to take some caution.

This drawing, my friend, cannot be printed any smaller, firstly because the letters will not come out correctly and secondly because the slider is designed for this size. Thanks for your comment.
