released from bed shortly before the end... maybe it would work better the other way up (wider base)?

Thank you, @aghaynes, for your feedback. Printing it upside down will create a problematic overhang. I suggest that you apply gluestick to the surface and also add an outer brim to your print profile to increase the surface area.
