Description
Background:
- The data logger is operated with a CR2032 button cell.
- Due to the low battery capacity of the CR2023 button cell with 3.2 volts and a nominal capacity of 230 mA, as well as the unknown storage time of the button cell until it was used, the duration of the data recording was relatively short (e.g. 3 months, personal experience).
- The activity of the data logger is signaled by an LED on the data logger lighting up regularly, with sufficient operating voltage being indicated by a green LED.
- Towards the end of the operational readiness due to the decreasing operating voltage, the LED then lights up orange and signals that the exhausted button cell needs to be replaced.
- The active display also shows the status of the operating voltage of the button cell, but this must be activated by pressing a button.
- Unfortunately, there is no permanent display of the battery status.
- There is a high risk that no data will be recorded over a longer period of time due to too low operating voltage, as no warning of any kind is given.
Improvement:
- Equipping the data logger with sufficient battery capacity.
- Since the data logger has a USB port and is operated with at least 5 volts for reading, the CR2023 3.2 volt button cell was replaced by 3 mono cells of type AA with 1.5 volts (=4.5 volts).
- The capacity of a mono cell of type AA is on average at least 1200 to 3000 mA.
- An appropriate external battery compartment with switch was used for the 3 mono cells of type AA.
- The connections of the battery compartment are sufficiently long, were led through the closure of the button cell compartment on the data logger (2x diameter 1.5mm) and soldered accordingly in the button cell compartment.
- For positioning (setting up, hanging) the data logger with the 3 mono cells of type AA in the external battery compartment on site, a very simple holder / stand was designed and implemented as a 3D print.
- Either of the two openings can be used to attach it to a wall.
Tip:
The external battery compartment, the data logger and the bracket can be secured using short pieces of double-sided adhesive tape.
