Description

I STRONGLY recommend printing the new multi-plate profile. I'm adverse to glue myself, but results are overall improved and the presentation is much better with brown or even wood filament grips!

The ultimate gun from the ultimate sandbox game! The tool gun is the primary mechanism for interacting with and modifying the world around you in the 2006 game Garry's Mod, by Garry Newman and Facepunch Studios.

The model presented here can be printed in a single piece, which will require significant and careful support pruning to maintain some of the more delicate details. That is the version shown printed fully gunmetal grey PLA in the model pics.

There is now also a multi-piece/multi-plate print profile as well, which is shown in gunmetal grey with a brown grip. I highly recommend using that profile instead. It cuts down on the support pruning immensely and helps preserve some of the very small details like the wires between components.

Some nice Wood PLA does wonders for the grips, and if you can get your hands on a wood colored marker you can really make it pop! Below was an Ohuhu Y13 - Chestnut Brown marker applied to Wood PLA from “3D Printing Lab Corp”.

If you want to get really nifty, stick a hand written note on the upper right of the screen, like the in-game model has!

printed the new doweled version. the pins were way to tight so I scaled them down to 99% and they fit fine. for v3 might I suggest rather than attempting to print the very fine wires ( I broke most of them removing supports) could you remove them and add 1.75 mm holes to use a raw piece of filament as the wire?

Thanks for the print and the great feedback, those are fantastic suggestions! It is important to keep the pins as snug as possible so they can actually aid in alignment, but if you can confirm 99% scaling worked well for your print I'll update the profile accordingly. Would you suggest going with 99% or do you think 98% would still be tight enough? I have to give this model another print anyways, I knocked mine off a table and the top parts shattered, so I'll rework the pieces to accept raw filament and give that a test this weekend as well. Your print looks great, thanks again for trying it out!

Replying to @zypher :
99% was still pretty tight, but my printer is not finely tuned, and has over 1k hours on it lol. I noticed the ends were bulged like a dog bone. Couple mini pins for the parts that go on the rear of the frame (could they just be attached to the model instead?) Ill keep an eye out for any updates

the small wires are very hard not to break. could be fixed with glue but I think it's fine.

Could you re cut the model to use printed dowels for alignment? also could you export as a higher quality mesh to make it more round?

This model definitely warrants a v2.0 remix, I'd love to at least add some relief cuts to aid with alignment and possibly use some dowels or I-beams to help glue adhesion and further solidify the alignment is a great idea. I'll look at getting that cranked out this weekend, I've got quite a few other prints in the hopper ahead of that right now. I did just extract the model again and confirmed it is already the full quality/resolution as it exists in game. The game model could certainly be upscaled/re-rendered but with the trade off of damage to or outright loss of fine detail like the wires and small ribbons. If you have any experience with that and would like to remix this model, please have at it! And thanks for checking out the model!

Just uploaded a print profile with alignment pins and recesses in the major components to help with assembly. If you get around to printing it, definitely let me know!
