Description

Hey there!

After I noticed release of the contest, “Contour Duplication Tools” was released, I spent a few days creating a simple, yet effective design. I present to you a very simple, customizable, fully 3D printed compass & wood scribing tool.

Note: The “needle” of the compass has 2 versions; one version is the fully printable version and the other version is for a toothpick.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Uses

  • Drawing Compass (draws perfect circles)
  • Contour Duplication tool (this might be hard for the design, but still doable)
  • Parallel Marking tool (use the flat surface of the toothpick holder against the wall)

Print Instructions

The 3D model is a relatively easy 3D print with minimal supports. The 3D model in the image was printed on my Prusa i3 Mk3s+.

  • Supports: Yes, but only for the Toothpick Holder (refer to “Build-Plate Orientation” image for clarification)
  • Infill: 15% is sufficient
  • Brim: Optional (I did not use a brim)

The thread and the nut should not need supports. A decently tuned 3D printer should handle them just fine. I modeled a lot of tolerance between the thread in the nut, but feel free to add more tolerance using the .f3d file (comment or message me if you need any help)

Open Source, Simple, and Easy to Modify & Remix

I added the .f3D files in there for those who need to 1) tweak tolerances or 2) add their own twist to the idea. The file's license allows you to remix and modify the design :)

  • Since the design is relatively small (less than 10g of filament in total, you don't have to be afraid if the model doesn't work first try.
  • The toothpick and the pencil should snugly fit in, but they should not be 1) so loose that they fall out or 2) need to be sanded down to fit in.

The current .stl files are compatible with a standard #2 (hexagonal) pencil (as seen in the photos). The toothpick is a standard bamboo toothpick that is 2 mm in diameter.

Feel free to refer to the photos for dimensions.

As I am still familiarizing myself with Fusion 360, the .f3d file may be frustrating to modify - if you need any help, feel free to add comments and/or message me through the built-in messaging application.

Needed a compass quick (couldn't find the one I bought) so opened Maker World and found this one, fit the bill and did the job, I especially like the use of the tooth pick. Printed in the 0.16 mm Optimal setting with PET-G in like 45 minutes I had what I needed. Thanks

Printed in multicolor silky PLA and overall came out very nice. My only feedback is that the nut is extremely hard to thread on. I'd like to recommend adding an index to the "pencil" side to hold the bolt head in place while tightening the nut.

it works! Although using a toothpick is not the best. But i love that it allows you to replace it when it inevitably breaks.

This is an incredibly functional print, and I’m especially impressed with the bolt and washer design which give it an industrial look. The only small challenge I had was figuring out what to place in the shallow hole. I eventually landed on a toothpick which worked perfectly.
