Description

I found this model on Thingieverse but found it tricky to print without support because of the overhangs, especially on the sorting hat and one of the towers. So I imported it to Bambu Studio, added some supports to it and added support blockers to avoid the base where the magnets should go to be supported.

I also fixed some of the model's non-manifold edges and coloured the pieces in two colors and the board in four colours, using black, white, gold and silver. Additionally, I have divided all the available models into Golden Pieces (Dumbledore, Tonks, Mr. Weasley) and Silver pieces (Ron, Hermione, Harry) so no two pieces on the board are the same.

The colours used are:

  • Geetech Silver Silk PLA
  • Geetech Gold Silk PLA
  • SUNLU Black PLA+
  • Elegoo White PLA

I have also applied variable layer heights to each piece and sorted it into plates and colours, so they can't be printed all together. I am very happy about the results and will be gifting this to my friend's spouse as a wedding gift, as she is a PotterHead.

To print this, just print each plate once for both the Gold, Silver and Board print profiles. The profiles have been set as following:

Golden

  • King-→Dumbledore
  • Queen-→Tonks
  • Bishop-→ Mr. Weasley
  • Knight-→ Delivery Owl
  • Tower-→ Goblet
  • Pawn-→ Dobby

Silver

  • King-→Harry
  • Queen-→Hermione
  • Bishop-→ Ron
  • Knight-→ Unicorn
  • Tower-→ Hogwarts tower
  • Pawn-→ Sorting hat

Board

Half of the board is black, white and golden, and the other half is black, white and silver.

The print speeds are halved based on a Silk PLA profile I found on reddit, so if you're printing with normal or high speed PLA you can probably get away with printing in Sport or Ludicrous mode.

Completed The Chess Set Finally lol. I absolutely love it! It turned out really good. Now I am in the midst of printing out the box to hold all the contents in. As You can see, I am almost competed on that as well.

The top print of the board do the four parts remain separate or do you need to do something to join them

Hello! You can join them witha bit of super glue, a hot solder on the joint of the back or a 3d pen and using the same filament you used for the board. Did you make the Philosopher's stone figures out ot PLA or with a resin printer?

help- im trying to print the silver towers and keep getting manifold errors. if i print them anyway, it fails midprint. I run Bambu studios for Mac - so i dont have the fix automatic fix option. I tried Formware but it keeps timing out. I love this set so id really appreciate some help, please

What kind of error do you get? I can't fix the manifold errors because then some of the walls of the models disappear (it's a problem from the original files). Would you like me to fix the manifold errors in windows and post a different profile? We can try to fix it that way

thanks for the offer! I appreciate it. I was thinking of trying to cut the tower in half: print the top & bottom separately. I did that with “Ron” and then that piece printed correctly. I will try that before I have you go to all the trouble (unless other users are experiencing the same thing).

I have sliced and print tested the golden set with the A1 mini, I have also slowed it down a little bit to make the print more reliable. Please let me know if you need more A1 Mini profiles!

Hello friend! The sizes of these models in inches would be as following: The board consists of four square models (2 gold, 2 silver) which are approximately 7.24 x 7.24 x 0.06 inches. For the sets, the larger pieces are 1,17x1,17x3,38 inches approximately (kings and queens) whereas the pawns are 0,94x0,94x1,92. I think you can set Bambu Studio in Imperial system if you go to preferences (Ctrl + P). Hope this helps!
