The Project
This is a 3D printer-optimized version of the classic black stick/spudger, an essential for any tech toolkit. After breaking my original, I designed this replacement to be as close to the classic form factor as possible while being easy to print at home.
Understanding the Build: Layers vs. Injection Molding
Because this tool is 3D printed, it is built layer-by-layer. It’s important to note that this process creates different physical properties than a factory-standard injection molded part.
Think of these as convenient, consumable versions of the original. They are designed to be "sacrificial"—it is often better for a cheap plastic tool to wear down or snap than to damage the expensive electronics you’re working on. Since they only take 15 minutes to print, you can always keep a fresh, sharp one on standby.
💡 Pro-Tip for Durability
Through testing, I’ve found that these perform best when the first layer (the single cohesive bottom layer) is used as the top of your prying surface. By using that solid, continuous face to leverage the stacked layers underneath, you significantly reduce the risk of the "wedge" tip splitting during use.
Personalization & Customization
One of the perks of printing your own gear is the freedom to use any color or material. I’ve included a small "LB" label (the LB Stick) as a nod to my initials, but you can easily customize this!
- Quick Project: Approximately 15-minute print time.
- Custom Text: Swap "LB" for your own initials (see instructions below).
Feedback & Makes
Seeing your prints is the highest compliment I can receive! Whether you’re showing off a custom color or sharing a repair success story, please post your makes.
Happy printing!
