This model is a dust separator that employs two stages to separate dust from the vacuum air stream. First the air flows through a large cyclone separator in the center of the part. After that it routes to 6 smaller cyclone separators on the outside of the model. Generally, smaller diameter cyclones are more efficient at separating smaller particles, but will clog with larger debris. So to get around this I looked at how many commercial vacuums solve the problem. By adding the large cyclone in line with the smaller cyclones we can get both larger and smaller particles. I created and tested this for/with drywall dust while renovating my house. It removes nearly 99% of the dust and keeps my filter clean. The first stage catches the majority of the dirt while the second stage helps to remove any smaller particles missed by the first. You can see which stage gets what based on what section of the catch can it lands in. The outer layer is where the finer dust lands.

 

How to use this model

In order to use this you will need to print the fittings for your setup, they are not included on the build plate 3MF file, not everyone will use the same fittings. There are two more print profiles, one is for the craftsman V20 shop vac and the other is for a standard 1.25" hose. Choose the one applicable to you. All the parts will thread together no additional hardware is required. 

 

Making your own fittings for your vacuum

I have included parts to attach it to standard 1.25" vacuum hoses and the Craftsman V20 cordless shop vac. If you have another type of vacuum I recommend looking at the DIY fitting files, these files are just .stp files that contain the threads. Using these files you can use your favorite CAD program to make fittings for your own application. If you click the download drop down and click download stl you will see all of the model .stp files, the ones beginning with DIY are the ones you want. 

 

Slicing on your own (Non-Bambu Printers)

The separator does not require support for the most part. The internal geometry will print with no support at all. However, the inlet threads will need support. The part is intended to be printed with the flat top surface on the build plate. I recommend to use the support paint tool to force it to print support under the inlet threads to you don't accidently get support elsewhere. All of the stp files are included, so if you are using a different slicer you should just download those. To get to them click the drop down to the side of “download or print”. Then click the “download stl”. You will need one top fitting, one inlet fitting, and one catch can to make it work. 

 

Using the separator with a 5 or 2 gallon bucket

I have included an extra stp call bucket catch can. This included a flange and downpipe that can be glued or drilled and screwed to a buck lid so that you get more storage for debris. It is important to note that the storage areas for the first and second stage debris cannot be combined or it will allow for airflow backward.
