Description
Poor Man’s CarPlay – iPad Air 2 Holder for VW Passat B7
The model consists of two parts that need to be joined together.
IMPORTANT 1: Both parts must be printed in ABS+ material; otherwise, the tabs holding the tablet may bend — especially in summer if the car is left in direct sunlight all day.
IMPORTANT 2: In addition to the printed parts, you will need 2 pcs M3x10 socket head cap screws.
Several mounting holes are provided on the tablet holder module, allowing you to adjust the tablet height as desired.
I mounted the CD-slot insert into the second hole from the top, which keeps the AC vent unobstructed while also leaving the hazard light button accessible.
The tablet holder does not rattle or wobble and remains stable even after thousands of kilometers of driving.
Inserting the iPad Air 2 is simple: slide it in from top to bottom.
The bottom tabs prevent the tablet from falling out, and additional side tabs provide lateral support.
Special attention was given to the charging port to ensure that the cable is not obstructed when charging from the car’s USB port.
Disadvantages:
- The entire radio front panel is covered. This does not bother me, as the main functions are accessible via the instrument cluster.
- The analog dashboard clock is also covered. It has an attractive design and looks especially nice at night, but navigation is ultimately more useful.
All in all, the model has been in continuous use for more than two years, covering over 200,000 kilometers (124,000+ miles).
It has survived two summers parked outdoors in direct sunlight without any deformation when printed in ABS+ (eSUN ABS+ black filament).
