This vehicle grade crossing is designed for traditional three-rail tubular O gauge track. It slips under the rails and creates a road surface that sits just below the railhead, with tapered approaches on both sides.
The original single-track version was physically printed and tested on tubular O track. The crossing fits the rails properly, sits flat, and trains pass over it without any issues.
Customizable options
The included OpenSCAD Customizer lets you choose:
- Single-track or double-track layout
- Road widths from 3.25" to 6.75", plus a custom-width option
- Adjustable double-track center-to-center spacing
- Smooth, brick-paved, or wood-plank roadway surfaces
- Brick-textured or plain side walls
- Complete crossing, double-track halves, or rail-fit coupon outputs
- Adjustable rail-channel width and road height
- Adjustable dovetail clearance for split double-track versions
The default model is the physically tested configuration:
- Single track
- 3.25" roadway width
- Brick roadway surface
- 16.5 mm road height
- 8.4 mm rail-channel width
Double-track version
Double-track crossings are generated as two printable halves with full-height vertical dovetails. The space between the tracks remains a continuous flat roadway rather than dropping back down into additional ramps.
Track spacing varies between layouts, so the double-track version is intended to be generated through the Customizer using your own center-to-center measurement.
The default 0.15 mm dovetail clearance was physically fit-tested. A small dovetail coupon is included so you can verify the fit on your printer before committing to the full parts.
Fit-test coupons
Two small test models are included:
- Rail-channel coupon — verifies the rail spacing and channel fit
- Dovetail coupon — verifies the joint clearance for split double-track models
Printing these first is strongly recommended when using different track, filament, layer heights, or printer calibration.
Compatibility notes
The tested dimensions are based on full-height traditional tubular O gauge track. O-27 uses similar rail spacing but is lower, so its height has not been physically verified. The Customizer includes road-height and rail-fit adjustments for users who want to adapt the model to other tubular track variations.
A full and unrestricted OpenSCAD development file is also included for anyone who wants access to the advanced geometry settings.
🚂 Printed one of my models? I’d love to see it on your layout! Please share your photos in the comments.
If you've made it this far and are wondering why my models are strange colors, it's because I'm trying to use whatever I have in my filament cabinet before buying more filament so pay no attention to the colors.
