PIONEER3D – 3D Printed Robotic Explorer

Attention: Pioneer3D print profiles have been configured and tested using Generic PLA filaments at moderate printing speeds.

If you are using Bambu Lab PLA filaments, print speeds may increase automatically. However, this can also raise the risk of print errors and may reduce the quality of certain parts.

If this occurs, it is recommended to limit the maximum print speed to around 160 mm/s.

Thank you.

PIONEER3D is a 3D-printed robotic explorer inspired by the iconic robot character from the computer-animated short film Planet Unknown (2016), written and directed by Shawn Wang.

With the kind permission of Shawn Wang, this project brings the spirit and visual identity of the original robotic explorer into the world of 3D printing and DIY robotics.

PIONEER3D is a simplified and adapted version of the original concept, redesigned specifically for 3D printing and adapted to work with the Bambu Lab CyberBrick platform. The goal was to create an accessible and fun robotic project that captures the charm of the original character while allowing makers to build, assemble, and program their own explorer.

🤖 Robot Features

PIONEER3D combines four servo motors, front steering, a rotating head, and LED lighting to create an expressive and functional robotic platform.

Drive and Movement

  • 2 × 360° Servos – Provide rear-wheel drive and propulsion
  • 1 × 180° Servo – Controls the steering of the front wheels
  • 1 × 180° Servo – Rotates the robot's head

Lighting

  • Front LED – Provides illumination at the front of the robot
  • Head LED – Illuminates the robot's head and adds to its expressive appearance

All these functions are controlled through the Bambu Lab CyberBrick, making PIONEER3D a great project for exploring robotics, electronics, programming, and 3D printing.

Watch this incredible 3D animated short film created by Shawn Wang.

Special Thanks

A special thank you to Shawn Wang, writer and director of Planet Unknown, for granting permission and supporting the creation of this fan-inspired adaptation.
