Description
Watering Can Rose Head
This rose head was designed specifically for my SmothFlow Watering Can V2 and can simply be pushed onto its spout. It creates a softer, more widely distributed flow, making the watering can better suited for seedlings, small pots and delicate plants.
About This Version
This is the first version I am comfortable publishing, although it took quite a few prototypes to get here. Designing a printable rose head turned out to be more challenging for me than expected.
During testing, I found that:
- Too many holes reduce the available pressure and cause the water to merge into a thicker, uneven flow.
- Holes that are too large create a similar problem.
- A larger internal chamber did not automatically improve the water distribution.
- Without properly shaped openings, the water tends to follow the printed surface and combine with neighbouring streams instead of forming clean individual jets.
- The angle and spread of the openings have a significant effect on the final spray pattern.
For this reason, the current version uses a relatively compact head, a limited number of smaller openings and tapered inlet and outlet sections. The sharper transition around the outlet helps the water separate from the surface instead of running along it.
The result is not perfect yet, but it currently provides the most consistent spray pattern of all the versions I tested.
Important Note About the Connection
Due to normal FDM layer lines on both the watering can spout and the rose head, the push-fit connection cannot be expected to be completely watertight. A small amount of dripping around the connection is normal, although the majority of the water still exits through the intended openings.
For a tighter but still removable connection, you can add a thin layer of PTFE sealing tape, removable tape or a small amount of suitable sealing grease around the spout before attaching the rose head.
Possible Future Improvements
Depending on interest and feedback, I may create additional versions with:
- Different spray widths and outlet angles
- A narrower or wider water distribution
- An internal groove to reduce water flowing back towards the connection
- A sealing groove for a small O-ring
- Alternative hole sizes or spray patterns
