Description
Are you in the market to building or replacing a picket fence? Well if you're building a 6' dog ear 7/8" thick cedar picket fence like I was this might save you some time and deliver a better product!
The first cedar picket fence I put up used a manual spacer I trimmed off of the end of a 2x4 and I painstakinly marked the location for each set of screws.
Second time around I thought there must be a better way so I sketched up a few revisions of this jig.
The concept is to place 1 reference picket at the correct height and plumb, run a string line across the top, and then placing each picket working left to right goes quickly.
All in one go this jig sets the picket spacing to 4.75mm, has a straight edge to reference the screw position on the previous picket and gives you hole spacing to spot with a drill. I used a small bar clamp to clamp the picket in place so I could remove the jig, use a countersink drill to finish, then sink two screws at the top and two at the bottom.
