Quetzalcoatlus is one of the largest known flying animals, belonging to the Azhdarchidae family It lived in North America during the Late Cretaceous period (approximately 70 to 66 million years ago), and its fossils were first discovered in 1971 in Big Bend National Park, Texas The genus name is derived from Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god of Aztec mythology The type species, Quetzalcoatlus northropi, had a wingspan of 10–12 meters, comparable to a Cessna light aircraft, and stood nearly as tall as a giraffe at the shoulder It had a long neck and was toothless, presumed to have waded in water to fish or to have been a scavenger, taking off by leaping and primarily gliding It ultimately disappeared along with the dinosaurs in the Late Cretaceous mass extinction
