Description

Amiga RGB to VGA Adapter (DB23 to VGA)

This project provides a simple RGB-to-VGA adapter for classic Commodore Amiga computers.

Why this adapter?

Original Amiga video ports use a DB23 connector, a connector that has become extremely difficult (and often impossible) to find nowadays. Genuine DB23 connectors are rare, expensive, and usually only available from salvaged hardware.

This adapter solves the problem by using a much more common DB25 connector.

To create the Amiga-compatible connector, simply:

  • Start with a standard DB25 female connector.
  • Remove (or cut) the two unused pins corresponding to the missing positions of the original DB23 connector.
  • Assemble the connector inside the provided 3D printed enclosure.

The result fits perfectly into the Amiga RGB video port while using inexpensive and easily available components.

Features

  • Uses readily available DB25 connectors.
  • No rare DB23 connector required.
  • Compact 3D printable enclosure.
  • Simple point-to-point wiring.
  • Low-cost solution.
  • Suitable for Amiga 500, 600, 1200, 2000, 3000 and other models using the standard RGB DB23 video port.

Compatibility

⚠️ Important

This adapter is passive. It does not convert video frequencies.

It is intended for use with:

  • VGA monitors that support 15 kHz RGB signals
  • Retro gaming monitors
  • OSSC
  • GBS-Control
  • RetroTINK devices
  • Other compatible RGB video processors

It will not work with standard VGA monitors that only support 31 kHz and higher scan rates.

Wiring

Use the wiring diagram provided in the project images.

The adapter routes:

  • Red
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Horizontal Sync
  • Vertical Sync
  • Ground

directly from the Amiga RGB port to the VGA connector.

Assembly

  1. Print both enclosure halves.
  2. Prepare a DB25 female connector.
  3. Cut/remove the two pins corresponding to the missing DB23 positions.
  4. Wire the connector according to the included schematic.
  5. Install the connector in the enclosure.
  6. Close the case using four small M2 16mm screws.

Notes

The small angled cut visible on one side of the DB25 connector reproduces the shape of the original Amiga DB23 connector and prevents incorrect insertion.

This design was created to help preserve and use original Amiga hardware without relying on increasingly rare DB23 connectors.

Enjoy your Amiga!
