DiveStar: Articulated Reverse-Buoyancy Pool & Dive Toy

DiveStar is a 100% print-in-place, 8-legged water toy engineered specifically for the pool or bathtub. Unlike traditional articulated prints that float flat on the surface, DiveStar features a custom-engineered dual-buoyancy mechanic.

When dropped into the water, the solid central core acts as an anchor and settles at the bottom. Upon touchdown, the 8 independent, air-trapping legs deploy and float vertically toward the surface. The result is a highly responsive kinetic toy that sways, dances, and reacts dynamically to underwater currents. 

It makes an excellent deep-end dive target for swim training, a unique bath toy, or a captivating addition to a home aquarium.

Material Recommendation

This model was designed with PETG in mind. PETG provides the ideal density to help the body sink efficiently, and it offers excellent UV and chemical resistance, ensuring the toy survives hours of exposure to intense summer sunlight and chlorinated pool water. While PLA will function, PETG is highly recommended for longevity.

Included Pre-Configured Print Profiles

To guarantee the physics work perfectly right off the print bed, four pre-configured .3mf project files are included with all necessary infill modifiers and weights already set up:

• A1 Mini Compatible 180mm – Monocolor: Optimized for single-filament printing.
• A1 Mini Compatible 180mm – Multicolor: Balanced specifically for multi-material systems.
• 237mm – Monocolor: A scaled-up version for higher visibility in the deep end.
• 237mm – Multicolor: The ultimate high-visibility, multi-colored pool companion.

Manual Slicing Specifications

If you prefer to slice the raw file yourself, you must use modifier blocks or object specific infill densities to achieve the correct underwater balance:

• Center Body Core: 100% Infill (Maximum ballast to ensure it sinks.)
• Legs (Monocolor): 10% Infill (Creates internal air chambers to provide lift.)
• Legs (Multicolor): 0% Infill (Compensates for the added weight of extra walls and purge transitions.)
• Wall Loops / Perimeters: Set to 3 walls minimum. This ensures the hollow legs remain completely watertight so they do not waterlog over time.
• Supports: None (Completely print-in-place.)
