Description

Shroud Wind Vane for Sailboats

A simple and lightweight wind vane designed for mounting on a sailboat shroud.

The model consists of two 3D-printed parts that screw together. A strip cut from a windsock is secured between the parts. The fabric aligns even in light wind, providing a clear visual indication of the apparent wind direction.

The idea was developed as a durable alternative to yarn telltales or tape indicators. The fabric can be replaced in seconds whenever it becomes worn.

Required Materials

  • 3D-printed parts
  • A piece cut from a windsock

I use an inexpensive windsock from AliExpress. A single windsock provides enough material for many replacement vanes:

Alternatively, any lightweight windsock or similar nylon fabric can be used. Windsock material is lightweight, weather-resistant, and specifically designed to respond to airflow.

Assembly

  1. Cut a suitable section from the windsock.
  2. Attach the fabric strip to the designated printed part.
  3. Screw the second part into place.
  4. Mount the wind vane on the shroud.
  5. Go sailing and keep an eye on the wind direction.

Print Settings

  • Material: PETG or ASA recommended
  • Layer height: 0.20 mm
  • Infill: 20–30%
  • Supports: Not required (unless your slicer suggests otherwise)

Notes

  • PETG is a great choice for long-term outdoor and marine use.
  • ASA provides the best UV resistance for permanent installation.
  • The fabric strip is considered a wear item and can be replaced at any time.

Compatibility

The current model is designed to fit 3–4 mm shrouds.

Need a different size? Let me know in the comments. Since the model is parametric, I can create versions for other shroud diameters if there is enough interest.

Happy printing, and fair winds! ⛵🌬️
