For string bed customization, use racquet stencil ink (e.g. Tourna, Babolat) rather than regular spray paint or markers - it's formulated to adhere properly without damaging the strings. 

Place a protective backing behind the strings, position the stencil, hold it firmly, and apply the ink in light coats over the cut-out areas. Let it dry fully before playing. Works best on synthetic/multifilament strings.
