Description

Parametric Coin & Capsule Tray

A fully parametric storage tray for coins and coin capsules. Whether you store your coins bare, in round capsules, or in square capsules — this tray handles all three. Coins stand upright in individual slots with a round cradle that self-centers and eliminates rattling. A finger slot in the floor lets you push any coin or capsule up with one finger, and a teardrop-shaped relief cut across all dividers means your finger never hits a divider edge mid-push.

If it's useful to you, a boost helps it reach other collectors. Thanks!

Supported storage types

  • Bare round coins — the round cradle cradles the coin edge perfectly. Works with any bullion coin: Silver Eagle, Maple Leaf, Britannia, Philharmonic, Krugerrand, and more
  • Round capsules — Lighthouse, Air-Tite, Quadrum, and others. Set capsule_od to the outer capsule diameter and capsule_thick to the assembled height
  • Square capsules — switch capsule_shape to Square for a simple rectangular slot without the round cradle

Features

  • Round cradle — capsule or coin sits snugly, self-centers, lifts out cleanly via the finger slot
  • Optional finger slot — a slot in the floor lets you push coins or capsules up from below. Set finger_w = 0 to disable it entirely (useful for half-height trays where coins already protrude above the rim)
  • Teardrop divider relief — a continuous relief cut along the base of all dividers so your finger moves freely when pushing coins up
  • Full or half height — full height encloses the coin completely; half height lets the coin protrude above the rim for easy one-hand retrieval
  • Fully parametric — any diameter, any thickness, any slot count
  • 100% support-free — print floor on the bed, nothing else needed

Customizer parameters

Capsule / Coin Dimensions

ParameterDescription
capsule_shapeRound or Square
capsule_odOuter diameter or width (mm)
capsule_thickCoin or capsule thickness — always measure with calipers!
inner_clearanceSide clearance in the cavity

Reference dimensions — bare coins (no capsule)

CoinDiameterThickness
1 oz Silver Eagle40.60 mm2.98 mm
1 oz Silver Maple Leaf37.97 mm3.29 mm
1 oz Silver Britannia (2013–)38.61 mm3.00 mm
1 oz Vienna Philharmonic37.00 mm3.20 mm
1 oz Gold Krugerrand32.77 mm2.84 mm

For capsules: capsule_od = capsule outer diameter, capsule_thick = assembled capsule height. Values vary by brand — always measure.

Tray

slot_count (1–100), wall thicknesses, floor thickness, clearances, edge rounding, full/half height.

Tip: Bare coins are ~3 mm thick vs ~8.5 mm for capsules — you can fit far more in the same tray length. A 250 mm bed fits ~55 bare coin slots or ~20 capsule slots.

Finger Slot

Width, lead-in chamfer, teardrop relief radius.

Recommended print settings

  • Material: PETG (recommended)
  • Layer height: 0.2 mm
  • Walls: 3 perimeters
  • Infill: 15–20%
  • Supports: none
  • Brim: none needed
  • Orientation: floor on the bed — the tray prints standing upright with the floor flat on the print surface. No other orientation needed.

Bed size guide

The tray length is determined by slot_count, capsule_thick, and slot_clearance. Rough estimates:

ContentThicknessSlots on 220mm bedSlots on 250mm bedSlots on 350mm bed
Bare coins (~3mm)~3.4mm~45~55~80
Round capsules (~8.5mm)~9.1mm~17~20~28

If the tray is too long for your bed, reduce slot_count and print multiple trays.

Fit test

Before printing a full tray, set slot_count = 3 for a quick test print (~45 min). Check that your coins or capsules slide in and out smoothly, then adjust capsule_thick or slot_clearance if needed.

A note on how this model came to be

Like many of you, I had a growing collection of coin capsules and couldn't find a storage solution that really worked — existing models either made capsules impossible to remove cleanly, didn't fit my capsule sizes, or both.

I'm a software developer by trade, so problem-solving is second nature — but CAD is a different world. I'm being transparent here: this model was built with AI assistance through what the community calls vibe coding — describing the problem, iterating on the geometry, tolerances, and print orientation in conversation until everything worked. The round capsule cradle, the teardrop divider relief, the finger slot: every detail came from working through what actually annoyed me about existing designs and finding a better solution, one iteration at a time.

I'm publishing it because I figure if this was my problem, it's probably yours too. I hope it helps.

If something doesn't fit for your coins or capsules, check capsule_thick first — that one parameter fixes most fit issues.

What's next?

Depending on interest, future versions could include:

  • Slab storage — a dedicated tray for graded coins in NGC/PCGS holders (different geometry, separate model)
  • Lid version — a sliding or snap-fit lid to fully enclose the tray for dust protection and transport

If either of these would be useful to you, leave a comment — it helps prioritize what gets built next.
