Description

DESCRIPTION

In woodworking, clamps and T-tracks are commonly used.  Here is my T-Track clamp brace design that’s quick and easy to use, that doubles as a track stop as well.  The clamp uses a custom quick release lever approach that allows you to quickly position and reposition the clamp up and down your T-track.

My clamp is for those that use a standard T-track 30.  That’s where the track is 30mm wide.  My clamp will not fit T-track 19 set-ups.

The brace plate can rotate 360 degrees around the central screw, allowing it to be fixed in any direction.  The brace allows you to steady material while you work on it.

ASSEMBLY

You will need two screws and two heat set brass inserts for each clamp assembly.  The brass inserts require a soldering iron to fit, so dangerous high temperatures are used.  Only proceed with fitting brass inserts if you have suitable soldering iron handling skills.

When inserting the screws into the brass inserts, it’s a good idea to apply some Loctite to ensure that the screws don’t loosen and fall out.

Expect that the large printed screw to be a little tight when assembling the large printed nut. This screw should noticeably loosen after first use.

In addition to the four 3D printed parts, my clamp uses M3 brass inserts and M3 x 8mm screws.  These brass inserts and screws are readily available, including from the Maker World store …

Q&A

Q:  If I screw down the clamp tightly, can the clamp break?

A:  All clamps have a breaking point, but plastic clamps will break under lower forces, hence only tighten the clamp sufficient to meet your clamping needs.

Q:  Can I make stronger clamps?

A:  Stronger plastics can withstand higher tightening forces, for example, PACF and PET-CF.  Most use cases can be satisfied with PLA or PETG.
