Description

I made this smaller 2kg version first, but I decided to step it up and redesign it again and make a proper plate that doesn't have a lid and has some internal braces that you can't really see, thanks to the cement, but they sort of protrude and work as bumpers as well so other plates will not be banging directly into the cement, but the plastic frame itself.

Once again, I would recommend using PETG or a stronger material, but I printed mine in PLA as I ran out of black PETG and don't want my plates in bright orange…

This time, I would also recommend mixing cement or concrete beforehand in a bucket or something and pouring it in both at the same time. With the concrete exposed, I would say it is better to mix it properly, not like my first design, where it does not really matter, as it had a lid.

Anyways, as I said, there are several new features on this design from the last one, first bracing as mentioned before, overall more sturdy construction using

about 270 or 280g of plastic per plate, so less than the last one, it is simpler to print with no supports, and finally it has flats so you can easily stand them up, but they are not so pronounced as to be balanced well.

Lastly, I got rid of the lid as it takes up space on the bar. Cement gets in the screw, so you need to clean it off and then fight with it, and this way it looks better as well, I would think.

I modelled them with a 27mm hole for the bar, as it seems to fit most bars. if anyone wants a custom size or one for the Olympic bar, let me know.

For people who will start talking about how it is cheaper to buy one , here are the numbers I am seeing in the UK: pretty much any weight plate goes for £25 per 10kilos, with smaller ones even more expensive.

Meanwhile,e I just looked at prices of cement, a 24kg bag is like 8 quid and one 1kg spool at like £10 can make up like 2 pairs of 5kg dumbbells at the cost of under 4 quid a plate, so half the price of shop bought plates.
