Description

This model “rolling rings” is a quick (under 45 min) and cheap (under 10 grams) print that's fun to play around with.

The model rolls as if it were a ball or cylinder rolling on a surface. It's a fun party trick, or is a fun way to teach kids about the concept of “center of gravity”.

The print profile contains two different rings…no glue required to assemble the print, just push the two rings together and you're good to go.

Explanation of the print:

This geometric design behaves as if it were a ball or a smooth cylinder rolling on a surface. When you attach two disks perpendicular to one another, and where the grove attaching them is 29% of the radius of the disk, the center of gravity of the two disks while rolling never changes height. Because there are no “pits” in the potential energy as it rolls, it's always at an unstable positioning, like a ball or cylinder. As nerdy as it sounds, this particular geometric design has been a discussion at many family gatherings as of late. I decided to make this to see how well it actually works….And it does!

Comments about the design:

The table in the GIF is propped up at a small decline (3-5% or so). With gravity on its side, it rolls better. This design is primarily a proof of concept that I wanted to make look cool. If folks end up liking this print, I'll create new designs optimized for rolling (ie. Weight distributed on the outside of the ring, rounded/sharper edges, etc.)

Hope you find the print lots of fun!
