Description
Magnetic Vacuum Hose Adapters
Tired of fighting vacuum hoses every time you switch tools? This magnetic quick-connect system lets you swap between machines in seconds.
After trying a number of vacuum hose connection systems, I couldn't find one that worked well for my workshop setup and tools. Most systems either didn't fit my machines or weren't as quick and convenient as I wanted, so I decided to design my own.
This modular magnetic coupling system is designed around a 50 mm flexible spiral vacuum hose connected to a Dust Commander cyclone separator. The magnetic couplings allow fast tool changes while maintaining a secure connection and a good seal.
(Creditation and inspiration below)
Features
- Modular magnetic quick-connect system
- Designed for standard 50 mm spiral vacuum hoses
- Fast and easy tool changes
- Self-aligning magnetic couplings
- Secure connection with a satisfying snap-fit action
- Expandable system for additional custom adapters
Included Adapters
- 50 mm spiral hose connector
- Dust Commander cyclone connector
- Table saw adapter for a 66 mm dust port
- Triton TSPL152 jointer adapter
- Triton TPT125 thickness planer adapter
Magnetic Coupling Design
Each coupling half uses six 10 mm × 3 mm neodymium magnets (12 magnets per complete connection).
The magnets are installed from the back of the coupling and are designed as a tight press-fit, so no glue should be required.
For best performance, use N54 magnets or stronger.
Important: Alternate the magnet polarity during assembly. When assembled correctly, the couplings automatically rotate into alignment and snap together with a very satisfying click.
Gasket System
The system uses a TPU gasket to improve sealing and alignment.
Only one gasket needs to be printed and attached to the hose-side coupling. The matching tool-side coupling includes a recessed groove designed to accept the gasket.
The system will connect without the gasket, but the TPU seal significantly improves alignment and dust extraction performance.
If preferred, a suitable rubber gasket from a local hardware store may also work.
Hose Connection
The hose connector features a spiral thread designed to match standard 50 mm flexible spiral vacuum hoses.
Tip: Check the direction of the spiral on your hose before printing. Depending on your hose, you may need to mirror the model in your slicer so the thread orientation matches the hose spiral.
The connector should be compatible with most standard 50 mm spiral hoses.
Recommended Print Settings
Material: PETG
I recommend PETG because it is more durable and impact-resistant than PLA in a workshop environment.
If you print the system in PLA, I'd be interested to hear how it performs over time. Feel free to leave a comment with your results.
Settings
- Layer height: 0.2 mm
- Infill: 15% Gyroid
- Supports: Not required
The models have also been optimized with seam placement in mind to help produce cleaner-looking prints.
Assembly
1. Print the required coupling parts.
2. Insert the magnets from the rear side of each coupling.
3. Alternate magnet polarity as you install them.
4. Test-fit the mating coupling before installing all magnets.
5. Install the TPU gasket on the hose-side coupling. (use some superglue)
6. Attach the hose connector to your spiral hose.
7. Enjoy quick and easy tool changes.
Future Expansion
This system was designed for my own workshop, but the modular magnetic interface makes it easy to create additional adapters for other tools.
If you create new adapters, improvements, or remixes, I'd love to see what you come up with.
Happy printing and happy woodworking!
Credit & Inspiration:
This model is heavily inspired by the amazing design by @flashfr3ak. I am currently learning Fusion 360, and I used his model as a reference to practice building complex shapes from scratch. While I modeled and measured every single part of this file myself from a blank canvas, the brilliant original concept belongs entirely to them. Please make sure to check out their original work here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/2743424-suction-hose-50mm-magnetic-coupling#profileId-3042673 . Thank you for the inspiration!
