FLYCATRAZ - Light-Sealed No-Escape Fruit Fly Trap

Most fruit fly traps on the market have a characteristic that reduces their efficiency: They allow light to reach the bait. Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) orient themselves by this light source and thus more easily find their way out. With FLYCATRAZ, this changes. The system is designed as a Light-Sealed Containment that submerges the bait area in darkness and specifically exploits the natural phototaxis of the insects. The central main area in the cup is completely shielded from light. Instead, small holes in the lid serve as light anchors. They divert the flies from the central entrance opening and lure them into the isolated edge area. There they are stuck in an optical dead end: They see the light, but the physical escape route remains blocked. For the insects, the system becomes the namesake high-security island – once inside, there is no escape.

Operation is absolutely straightforward: Simply fill the cup with apple cider vinegar up to the marked fill line inside and add exactly one drop of dish soap. Tip for optimal results: Also add a tiny piece of ripe fruit (e.g., peach or banana). The drop of dish soap is essential because it breaks the surface tension of the liquid – without it, the flies would merely land on the surface and escape again. Then put the lid on, position the trap, and the system does the rest. For cleaning, simply rinse the cup by hand.

An important note on material selection: While the trap also works reliably if you use translucent or light-colored materials - if you want to achieve maximum effect and full efficiency from the targeted light guidance, we recommend printing in a deep, opaque anthracite or black. Only with complete darkness inside will the contrast between the light dead ends at the edge and the darkened center be optimally exploited
