Traditional fruit fly traps focus on how the fly gets in. FLYCATRAZ focuses on preventing them from getting out.

Many fruit fly traps primarily answer one question: How does the fly get in? The orientation inside is often less precisely controlled. In classic funnel traps, ambient light often shines directly onto the bait like a flashlight. Transparent models even fully illuminate the interior. This allows fruit flies to orient themselves after entering.

FLYCATRAZ therefore takes a different approach.

The central main area of the cup is shielded from ambient light. Fruit flies are still attracted by the smell but receive no direct visual orientation to the entrance opening inside. Instead, small holes are specifically located in the outer edge of the lid. These points of light draw the flies away from the central entrance and into the isolated edge area, where they become trapped in an optical dead end: the light remains visible, but the way out is blocked. This is how FLYCATRAZ uses the insects' natural light orientation against themselves.

FLYCATRAZ becomes a high-security island for the insects, living up to its name: once inside, there is no escape.

Filling is absolutely straightforward: simply fill the cup with apple cider vinegar up to the marked fill line inside and add a small drop of dish soap. The drop of dish soap is important because it breaks the surface tension of the liquid. Without it, the flies could land on the surface instead of sinking into the bait.

Tip for optimal results: Additionally, add a tiny piece of ripe fruit, such as a banana or peach. Then, place the lid on, position the trap near the fruit bowl, organic waste, or directly at the infestation site, and let FLYCATRAZ do its work. For cleaning, simply rinse the cup by hand.

An important note on material choice: The trap can also be printed with lighter materials. However, to best utilize the light guiding concept, one should choose a material that is as opaque as possible. A deep anthracite or black is ideal. This keeps the central bait area dark, while the light points at the edge can optimally develop their effect
