Beach Hand Pump Toy

Inspired by childhood hand pumps, this creative hand-cranked water toy is specially designed with a “beach toy” theme. It uses 3D printing to recreate the interactive fun of vintage water retrieval, allowing children to intuitively experience simple mechanical principles while playing with sand and water. It helps develop their hands-on skills through interaction, combining fun with scientific education.

Design Highlights

Fully Printed Safe Design: All parts can be 3D printed, no screws are needed, assembly is simple, and the entire design features rounded edges, with no sharp corners, making it safer for children to play.

Realistic Pumping Interactive Experience: Replicating a lever-style pumping mechanism, simply press the handle to draw in and expel water, restoring the authentic water retrieval effect. This makes water play less monotonous and recreates the joy of childhood hand pumps.

Telescopic and Versatile Play: Freely adjust the rod length by connecting water pipes to adapt to various scenarios such as sandpits, shallow water, and buckets, offering more diverse ways to play.

Anti-Clog and Durable Design: The bottom features a built-in hollow filter screen to filter sand and impurities, preventing clogging during water play and ensuring durability even with repeated use.

Customizable Colors: The shell is available in various bright colors like pink, yellow, and blue to match the lively beach atmosphere. Children can also participate in choosing colors to create their unique toy.

Play Scenarios and Significance

How to play: First, dig a hole in the sand deep enough for the water outlet to be 10cm high. Then, bury the inlet filter screen of this part in the sand, leaving the top barrel-shaped part exposed.

When pumping water, you need to first pour water into the barrel to achieve a sealing effect, then press down quickly to draw water!

 

Children can use it to “build moats” for sandcastles, or compete with friends to see who can pump water faster, maximizing the fun of playing with water and sand. Parents can also assemble and operate it with their children, learning simple mechanical knowledge while playing. This small design is not just a beach toy; it also hopes to let more children have fun outdoors and experience the creativity and joy brought by 3D printing.

The assembly instructions are as follows:

 

You will need electrical tape. Make sure to pull it taut when wrapping to ensure a tight seal.

First, you need to wrap the connecting pipe of the beach base with a layer of electrical tapeto achieve a sealing effect (this step is crucial! This area is prone to air leaks, causing slow pumping).

As shown in the figure below; make sure to wrap the tape several times.

Then insert this part into the beach base and twist to tighten.

Next, twist and insert the beach base into the assembled barrel.

Note, after tightening the barrel and the beach base, you also need to wrap electrical tape around the connection point between the barrel and the base! Otherwise, the barrel's airtightness will be insufficient, preventing water from being pumped up!

 

Next, connect the base to the connecting pipe and the water pipe. Note that all connection points need to be wrapped with electrical tape to achieve a sealing effect.

Here, you can print and install the water pipe parts according to your preference and needs.

During my test, I used two water pipes (each 175mm long). From the base to the top of the water outlet barrel, the height was already 600mm,

and pumping water was still very easy. I feel like I could even add two more water pipes!

 

Next is the installation of the sand filter screen. Here you will need a rag, or two socks will also work. (When using socks, remember to use two; one left alone won't be worn, and two offer better filtration). Simply slide it onto the filter from bottom to top. It's important to ensure that the water passage holes are completely covered and not exposed, as this could lead to jamming and wear. After installing, use the printed retaining ring to press and secure it tightly.

Finally, insert the lower suction pipe and twist to tighten. (Note: No electrical tape is needed between the lower inlet pipe and the filter part; simply twist it in).

Project Completed!

Now you can happily go play at the beach!

P.S.:

  1. All parts require no supports
  2. Later, I will provide commercially available water pipes to replace the printed ones, which will be more convenient.
  3. In the future, the bottom filter component will be adapted to my large water press model.
  4. For the two large fixing holes and small holes in the base, everyone can freely create kits.
