Hanuman Thai
Print Profile(1)

Description
Hanuman is the main character and a heroic general in the Thai literary work *Ramakien* (based on India’s *Ramayana* epic). He is the son of Phra Phai (the Wind God) and Nang Sawaha, having been conceived when a weapon of Shiva struck and entered Sawaha’s mouth.
**Distinctive Characteristics and Supernatural Powers:**
**Appearance:** Hanuman is a white monkey (with a white body), wearing earrings (*kundala*), possessing diamond-like fur and crystal-like fangs. When displaying his full power, he appears with four faces and eight arms.
**Special Abilities:** He can fly through the air, transform his shape, enlarge his body to a gigantic size, extend his tail to great lengths, and even yawn stars and moons into existence.
**Immortality:** As the son of the Wind God, if he is killed by an enemy’s weapon, he can immediately return to life as long as the wind blows upon his body.
**Personality and Role:** Hanuman is deeply loyal to Rama and serves as a commander of the army in the war against Ravana’s forces, ultimately helping secure victory.
Unlike the original Indian version, where Hanuman is a celibate devotee, the Hanuman of Thai literature is portrayed as flirtatious and romantic. He has several wives and children, including Matchanu (son of Suphannamatcha) and Asuraphat (son of Benyakai).
Today, Hanuman continues to be regarded as a symbol of **loyalty, courage, wisdom, and discipline**, both in traditional beliefs and in the use of sacred amulets and talismans in Thai society.
