Description

Pinwheel – A Buildable Wind Toy

Watch colors come alive in the wind!

This colorful Pinwheel is a simple, fun, and educational toy that introduces children to motion, airflow, and color through hands-on play. The pinwheel spins in the wind, creating a colorful visual effect that encourages curiosity and outdoor exploration.

Designed as a buildable toy, the model is assembled from individual blades, allowing children and parents to create their own unique color combinations while learning how the spinning mechanism works.

Why Kids Love It

  • Spins in the wind with colorful motion
  • Encourages outdoor play and exploration
  • Inspires creativity through custom color combinations
  • Easy to assemble and understand
  • Fun to display in gardens, flower pots, balconies, or play areas

Educational Value

This toy helps introduce children to:

  • Wind and airflow
  • Rotational motion
  • Cause-and-effect relationships
  • Color recognition and color patterns
  • Basic mechanical assembly

By building the pinwheel themselves, children can see how individual parts come together to create a moving toy.

No AMS Required

Every blade is printed either in pairs or as separate parts, making the model accessible to users without an AMS. Simply print the blades in your favorite colors and assemble them into a complete pinwheel.

Create:

  • Rainbow patterns
  • Alternating color designs
  • Team colors
  • Seasonal themes
  • Any combination you can imagine

Printing

Print:

  • Plate 1 x4 (or x8 for single blade profile) to get 8 blades
  • Plate 2 x1 to get Center axle, Front and back pin and Pole

I recommend printing in PETG, at it has strong layer adhesion and is quite flexible. Mine is printed in Elagoo PETG Rapid and eSun PLA+.

The blades might be difficult to get of the plate; I recommend waiting for the plate to cool down, and using a bed scraper (like this) to loosen one of the edges and carefully work your way around. This is to avoid creases on the blades.

Assembly

Assembly is quick and beginner-friendly.

  1. Print all parts. Ensure you have alle the necessary parts as decribed above in the Printing section. Clean of the support from the axle.
  2. Insert the right angle corner of the blades into the center hub, rotating one step on the octagon for each blade, until you only have one blade left.
  3. Make a smal slit right where the circle meets the triangle shaped of the blade, and use this slit to fit the last blade on the axle.

  4. Start bending in the outer circle connections of the blade and attach the sam way you did earlier, keeping the orientation the same as the other connection for the corresponding blade.
  5. When completed the circle, press the large front pin into place. Depending on your filament and/or calibration, you might need to shave somthing of the latches on the pin.
  6. Flip it over, thread the pole on the round axle, and attach the pinwheel to the pole with the small back pin.
  7. Give it a spin and let the wind do the rest!

(The blades do brush against the pole, so it makes some noise when spinning.)

Design Goals

This model was created to combine creativity, motion, and hands-on building into a simple toy that children can enjoy while learning through play. The pinwheel transforms a collection of colorful printed parts into an interactive object that responds directly to the environment, making every breeze part of the experience.

If you print one, I'd love to see your color combinations and creative variations!
