Orixá Oxum
Print Profile(1)

Description
Oxum is one of the most revered deities (Orixás) in Afro-Brazilian religions, such as Candomblé and Umbanda. She is the majesty of fresh waters, governing rivers and waterfalls, and is widely known as the lady of love, beauty, and fertility
Here are the main points that define this Orixá:
- Domains: Fresh waters, rivers, and waterfalls. It is through the serene flow of the waters that Oxum spreads her energy
- Main Attributes: Love, beauty, prosperity, wealth, and motherhood. She is the protector of pregnant women, newborn children, and the guardian of female fertility
- Symbols: The Abebê (a mirror usually made of brass or gold, often with a fan) is her most characteristic tool, symbolizing her vanity, but also her wisdom and ability to see what is hidden
- Colors and Metals: Her primary colors are yellow and gold (representing wealth). Gold and brass are the metals consecrated to her
- Salutation: "Ora Yê Yê Ô!" (an expression of reverence that can be translated as "Hail the kind Mother!")
- Religious Syncretism: In Brazil, Oxum is often syncretized with the Catholic figure of Our Lady, varying by region (Our Lady of Conception, Our Lady Aparecida, or Our Lady of Candles)
Although remembered for her sweetness, diplomacy, and grace, African mythology also highlights that Oxum is a cunning warrior. Just like the rivers she dominates, she can be calm and nurturing, but also relentless and overwhelming when her fury is awakened
