📖 A Little History
Created by American sculptor Hiram Powers in 1843, the Greek Slave was essentially the blockbuster movie of its day. It became the most famous sculpture of the 19th century and made Powers an international star.
The sculpture depicts a Greek woman captured during the War of Independence. It was so incredibly lifelike—and provocatively nude for the 1840s—that some galleries in the US actually required men and women to view the exhibit in completely separate rooms!
