Upgrade your ASKAR FMA180 Pro with the Gemini Electronic Autofocuser using this custom-designed mounting kit.

This project provides a compact and sturdy solution for installing the Gemini focuser directly on the ASKAR FMA180 Pro, allowing precise electronic focusing for astrophotography and remote imaging sessions.

The design has been optimized to ensure proper alignment, rigidity, and smooth operation of the belt-driven focusing system while maintaining a lightweight setup.

What's Included

The printable kit includes:

• Gemini mounting cradle/support
• ASKAR FMA180 Pro support bracket
• 150 mm Vixen dovetail bar

The ASKAR telescope is mounted on top of the support, while the Gemini electronic focuser is securely housed inside the dedicated cradle.

Additional Hardware Required

To complete the assembly you will need:

Fasteners

• 2 × M6x12 screws (for the Vixen dovetail bar)
• 3 × M4x12 screws (for securing the ASKAR FMA180 Pro)
• 2 × M4x8 screws (for securing the Gemini focuser)

Transmission Components

• 1 × MXL Timing Belt – 148 Teeth – 8 mm width
• 1 × MXL Pulley – 20 Teeth – 5 mm bore – 8 mm belt width

Printing Recommendations

Material

Recommended:

• ASA ⭐
• ABS ⭐
• PETG ✓

For maximum durability and outdoor resistance, ASA is strongly recommended.

Additional Recommendation

For maximum rigidity and long-term durability, it is highly recommended to install M6 brass heat-set inserts in the focuser base before attaching it to the Vixen dovetail bar.

The brass inserts can be heat-installed into the printed part and provide a much stronger and more reliable threaded connection than directly threading into plastic, especially when the setup is frequently assembled, disassembled, or used outdoors.

Recommended:

• 2 × M6 brass heat-set inserts
• Installed from the underside of the focuser base before final assembly

This solution significantly improves the overall mechanical strength and stability of the mounting system.

• Layer Height: 0.16 mm
• Infill: 25–30%
• Walls: 4 perimeters recommended
• Supports: Only where necessary
• Brim: Optional for ASA/ABS

Before tightening all screws, verify the belt alignment and ensure the focuser rotates freely without excessive tension.

For the best long-term performance, print the parts in ASA or ABS, especially if the telescope will be used outdoors under varying temperature conditions.
