Description

Mountain Spirit - Creatures in Illusion
---Ailao Mountain after eating the 'jian shou qing' mushroom---
In the deep mountains of Yunnan, an ancient legend circulates:
Everyone who gets poisoned by wild mushrooms doesn't see illusions
They merely leave reality for a brief moment, straying into another world
That world is hidden amidst mountain mist, pine needles, rotten wood, and mycelium It overlaps with reality but never truly belongs to humans There are no animals, plants, or mushrooms in the true sense, because all things can possess consciousness, transform, and potentially become a kind of “spirit”
The tiny people seen by those who are poisoned, talking mushrooms, tree roots with eyes, flowers walking on rainy nights, and shadows peeking from deep within bamboo forests are not hallucinations created by the brain, but rather residents of that world they accidentally glimpse
Some only remember colorful dreams after waking up
Yet others can no longer distinguish between reality and the mountain's illusions
And “Mountain Spirit” is precisely a monster illustrated guide dedicated to documenting this hidden world
It includes creatures that only appear in “poisoned hallucinations”: sprites transformed from mushrooms, moss-covered mountain beasts, wildflowers that imitate human voices, fish hidden in stream reflections, and trees, grasses, insects, and birds that seem ordinary but have long possessed souls
In this world, all animals and plants can be included in the illustrated guide Some are cute, some are dangerous, some love to play tricks, and some simply live peacefully in the mountains
But all mountain spirits share one commonality:
They do not wish for humans to discover them
Because to them, humans are the most dangerous, gluttonous, and unpredictable monsters
“Mountain Spirit” records more than just monsters
It is also another Yunnan that humans see when they mistakenly venture deep into the mountains
Xiaohong - Spirit of the Green-headed Mushroom
After a full year of slumber, a little forest spirit finally awoke
She pushed aside pine needles, rubbed her sleepy eyes, and emerged from the damp earth, tiny dew drops still clinging to her hair
