The Silent Keeper of the Verdant Vault
Deep beneath the ancient ruins of Mythral Keep, beyond forgotten catacombs and sealed stone gates, there lies a chamber known only in whispered tavern legends as The Verdant Vault.
For centuries, adventurers believed it contained gold, relics, or perhaps the phylactery of a long-dead lich. None expected what awaited them.
At the center of the chamber sat a solitary figure cloaked in black robes. Motionless. Silent. Faceless.
No one knew whether it was a man, a spirit, or something older than either.
The figure cradled a single living plant.
Not a rare flower. Not a magical herb. Merely a humble succulent.
Yet the air around it shimmered with ancient magic.
The truth, hidden from history, was that this plant was no ordinary specimen. It was the Last Seed of Elaria, the first forest ever created by the gods during the Age of Dawn. Long before kingdoms rose and dragons claimed mountains, Elaria covered the world in endless green.
When the Demon Wars scorched the land, the forest was destroyed.
All except one seed.
The gods entrusted its protection to a devoted druid named Vaelor, who willingly surrendered his mortal life to become its eternal guardian. Neither alive nor dead, Vaelor became known as The Silent Keeper.
Centuries passed.
Empires fell.
Languages changed.
The Keeper never moved.
The succulent slowly absorbed the magic of ages, becoming a living reservoir of nature's essence. Legends claimed that if planted in barren soil, an entire forest could bloom overnight. If consumed, it could cure any curse. If corrupted, it could awaken a blight capable of swallowing kingdoms.
Many sought its power.
None succeeded.
Those who entered the Vault with greed in their hearts found themselves lost in endless corridors that did not exist moments before. Warriors saw their weapons crumble to dust. Wizards discovered their spells fading from memory.
Only those who entered seeking knowledge, balance, or redemption could even approach the Keeper.
And even then, he spoke only once.
A single question:
"Do you wish to possess life... or protect it?"
Few ever answered correctly.
To this day, bards tell stories of a shadowed guardian sitting in silence beneath flickering candlelight, watching over a small plant that may one day decide the fate of the world.
Some adventurers still search for the Verdant Vault.
Most believe it is a myth.
The Silent Keeper prefers it that way.
