🌿 Modular Plant Support System
A lightweight, modular and reusable plant support system designed specifically for efficient FDM 3D printing.
Build custom support structures for:
- 🍅 Tomatoes
- 🥒 Cucumbers
- 🫘 Beans
- 🌱 Climbing plants
- 🏡 Greenhouses
- 🪴 Raised beds
- 🌿 Vertical growing systems
- And many other garden applications
🎯 Design Goals
This project was designed around:
- ⚡ Fast printing
- ♻️ Low material usage
- 🔧 Simple assembly
- 📦 Easy storage
- 🧩 Modular expansion
- 🌱 Reusability season after season
The goal was not to create the strongest possible garden structure.
Instead, the focus was on creating a system that is:
- Lightweight
- Fast to print
- Material efficient
- Easy to assemble
- Modular and expandable
- Strong enough for everyday garden use
- Easy to disassemble and store compactly
A future extension project may focus specifically on ultra-compact off-season storage solutions.
🧩 Modular System

The entire system is built around interchangeable connectors and octagonal rods.
You can easily create:
- Single plant supports
- Multi-plant structures
- Vertical extensions
- Horizontal extensions
- Greenhouse frameworks
- Custom garden layouts
Expand your structure whenever your plants need more support.
🌿 Special Plant Components
Beyond the standard connectors, the project includes several components specifically designed for plant support.
🌱 Plant Connector
The Plant Connector can be used in two different ways.
Option 1 — Flexible Filament Loop
A simple piece of filament can be inserted through the connector to create a flexible support loop.
Benefits:
- Gentle on stems
- Extremely low cost
- Easily adjustable
- Reusable
Simply choose the filament length that best fits your plant.
Option 2 — Printable Locking Strap
The connector can also be used with the included printable locking strap.

Benefits:
- Fully 3D printable solution
- Adjustable diameter
- Secure locking mechanism
- No additional materials required
This allows the support loop to be locked at the desired size while remaining easy to reposition later.
⚓ Ground Anchor Rods
The Ground Anchor Rods are designed to increase stability when the structure is installed directly into soil.

Integrated stabilizing fins help:
- Reduce movement in loose soil
- Increase rigidity of larger structures
- Better support mature and heavier plants
These anchors become especially useful for taller or expanded configurations.
🛠️ Designed Specifically for Efficient 3D Printing
The octagonal rod design was primarily chosen to:
- Improve connector fit
- Prevent unwanted rotation
- Enable flat printing orientations
- Reduce support requirements
- Improve print efficiency
- Simplify plant clip attachment
Most parts can be printed quickly with minimal waste and little or no support material.
⚠️ Important Printing Orientation
Some parts are intentionally positioned at a 45° angle inside the provided print profiles.
This orientation was chosen to improve strength in critical load directions while maintaining efficient support-free printing whenever possible.
For best mechanical resistance:
- Keep the original orientation provided in the project files
- Do not rely entirely on automatic placement in your slicer
- Use the supplied profiles whenever possible
The included orientations were carefully selected to avoid weak layer directions.
☀️ Material Considerations
The project was primarily tested in PETG.
For very hot climates or prolonged direct sunlight exposure, I recommend using a light-colored PETG whenever possible.
Why?
- Dark colors absorb more heat
- Higher temperatures can reduce rigidity over time
- Lighter colors generally remain cooler outdoors
I personally use black PETG and it performs well in my current environment, but lighter colors may provide better long-term performance in extreme summer conditions.
⚙️ Recommended Print Settings
The project was primarily tested using PETG.
My personal settings:
- 2 walls
- 15% Gyroid infill
- Brims enabled
- Supports enabled for long rods (helps reduce warping)
These settings already provide very good results for normal garden use.
For:
- Larger structures
- Heavier plants
- Hotter climates
- Long-term outdoor installations
consider increasing to:
- 3 walls
- or 4 walls
for additional rigidity and durability.
📐 Parametric Files Included
The project includes two customizable parametric files:
- Adjustable Rods
- Adjustable Ground Anchor Rods
Simply click Customize to generate perfectly sized parts for your setup.
This makes it easy to adapt the system to:
- Custom plant spacing
- Taller plants
- Raised beds
- Greenhouse layouts
- Unique garden configurations
📦 Included Packs
The project is organized into several packs:
Starter Packs
Perfect for getting started quickly.
Vertical Extensions
Expand structures upward as plants grow.
Horizontal Extensions
Connect multiple structures together.
Full Reference / All Parts Pack
Contains every available component, including additional parts not included in the starter kits.
♻️ Build It. Expand It. Store It. Reuse It.
This project was created to provide a practical, reusable alternative to seasonal plant supports.
Build exactly what you need today.
Expand it tomorrow.
Store it compactly during winter.
Reuse it season after season.

🚀 08/06/2026 : New connector 6 Ways
🚀 05/06/2026 : New right-angle connector added
I added a new connector to the project: a right-angle connector designed to create 90° connections between rods. 📐
This part can be useful for building more rigid structures, side extensions, or custom shapes — for example when making plant trellises 🌱 or other modular support frames.
The new connector is available in the following print profile:
