Hammy lives in the Low Barns of Zoora, where he spends hours sorting seeds, husks, and small stones into nearly perfect piles. He says that every small thing holds a clue, though almost no one pays him any attention. One afternoon, he saw a seed roll by itself between the floorboards and followed it to a narrow crack from which a warm draft emerged. Hammy crouched down for a better look and discovered something strange: beneath the barn was an ancient tunnel, smooth and round, as if it had been built to reach very far. He dropped a light husk to see how far it would go down… and, after a while, a drop of salt water floated back up. Since then, Hammy believes that the ancient path beneath Zoora connects not only forests, meadows, and caves… it also reaches the sea, as if all its hidden routes are part of the same memory.
