Baphomet is an enigmatic goat-headed idol that symbolizes duality, the balance of opposites, and occultism. Its most famous modern representation was created by the magician Eliphas Lévi in 1856. Throughout history, it has evolved from a medieval myth to a symbol of Satanism.
Its historical and cultural evolution is divided into three key stages:
- Templar Origin (14th Century): The Inquisition falsely accused the Knights Templar of worshipping a pagan idol to justify the dissolution of the order and confiscate their assets.
- Lévi's Arcane (1856): The occultist Éliphas Lévi drew the "Goat of Mendes". It represented universal balance: the masculine and feminine, good and evil, and heaven and earth.
- Modern Icon (20th Century): Anton LaVey adopted a version of this image as the Seal of Baphomet, making it the official insignia of the Church of Satan.
Main symbolism:
- Arms: One arm points upwards (virtue) and the other downwards (vice), reflecting the famous hermetic maxim "as above, so below".
- Duality: Contains human and animal elements, masculine and feminine, dark and light.
- Torch: Located between its horns, it represents intellect, balance, and the search for enlightenment.
