Dual Balloon Powered Race Car Kit | STEM Project | Optional Turbo 3 Balloon Mode
Designed for speed, smooth airflow and simple assembly, this lightweight balloon powered race car kit was created as a fun and educational STEM-style project with a strong focus on real performance and easy printing.
Unlike many basic balloon cars, this design uses a dual-balloon propulsion system for smoother acceleration, longer thrust duration and more stable straight-line performance. The lightweight chassis, low-friction wheel setup and optimised airflow tubes help the car roll cleanly and consistently across smooth surfaces.
The long wheelbase and balanced layout help keep the car tracking straight from launch without complicated adjustments. The design also runs smoothly and tracks straight even using only a single balloon, as shown in the included GIF demonstration.
Ideal for classroom projects, science fairs, contests, family builds and tuning experiments.
Features:
- Dual-balloon propulsion system
- Lightweight low-friction design
- Long wheelbase for stable straight tracking
- Optimised 5mm airflow nozzle system
- Modular and easy-to-print construction
- Lightweight spoke wheels
- Smooth rolling axle setup
- Optional rubber band tyre support for extra grip
- Built-in small support sections for cleaner airflow tube printing
- Designed for easy assembly and experimentation
- Additional A1 Mini multi-plate version included
Turbo 3 Balloon Mode:
The chassis also includes a third mounting position for users wanting to experiment with an even more powerful triple-balloon setup. Simply print an additional airflow tube and balloon connector to create the optional turbo 3-balloon version.
Axle Spacers:
The model includes 4 small axle spacers designed to reduce wheel friction and improve smooth rolling performance.
For younger children, these spacers are optional and can be left out of the print for easier assembly and to avoid handling very small parts.
For additional safety with younger children, the wheels can also be glued onto the axles after assembly if preferred.
Extra Traction:
Small rubber bands can be fitted around the wheels to act as simple tyres for additional traction on smooth surfaces.
Printing Recommendations:
- PLA recommended
- 0.2 layer height
- 5% gyroid infill
- Print wheels flat on the build plate
- Print side panels flat for best surface finish and strength
- Minimal supports required
Assembly Notes:
- Designed for standard party balloons
- Push-fit style assembly
- Ensure wheels spin freely for best results
- Best performance achieved on smooth hard surfaces
Perfect For:
- STEM projects
- Science fairs
- Balloon powered car contests
- Classroom demonstrations
- Family activities
- Speed and distance tuning experiments
This project was designed to be simple, lightweight, modular and fun to experiment with while still delivering smooth and surprisingly powerful performance.
