Details:

Kapla block are a classic, vintage construction toy which encourage hand-eye coordination, creative expression, and open- ended play. Traditionally wooden, I decided to try printing my own plastic versions as a full set of real Kapla blocks is extremely expensive. As a bonus addition, I thought it would be fun to add a new pass-through interlocking feature, adding a whole new dimension of play.

From Wikipedia:
Kapla is a construction set for children and adults. The sets consist only of identical wood planks measuring 11.7 cm x 2.34 cm x 0.78 cm. This 15:3:1 ratio of length:width:thickness is different than the dimensions used for traditionally proportioned building blocks (such as unit blocks), and are used for building features such as lintels, roofs and floors. They are known for their stability in the absence of fastening devices.”

Features:

  • Easy print
  • Additional pass-through interlocking system to expand your construction options
  • infinitely scaleable- just keep printing more!
  • Multicolour potential: print in multiple colours to add a colour- centric dimension to the open ended play
  • Great way to use up excess filament
  • Added STEP files to allow customising if anyone has any ideas on how to expand the concept further.
  • Added stackable storage box which uses two blocks as the joining connector.

Print:

I print the blocks on a textured plate with mousear brims to reduce curling. 0.2mm layers, no supports, up to 20 blocks on a standard A/P/X series bed.

The box can be printed either with supports, or with a bridge for the underside groove, depending on your preference.

Tip: Due to the nature of plastic, these blocks can slip and slide off each other if you use a shiny filament such as PETG. I am now printing mine with Matte PLA which helps.
