This was a course project for Mechanical Principles and Methods; I made this on a whim.
I used the worst Rhino 8 to create and export the STEP file.
Below is the original project description. If the worm gear section (derived from Sergiu's work) is infringing, please contact us for removal.
The project was inspired by Sergiu's “Spool Rewinder - Split Base”, a very famous 3D printed filament spool rewinder.
We approached it from two aspects, the gear train and the appearance, combining the look of a projector to design this 'Reel Projection' rewinder.

Production Process
1. Gear theory analysis and optimization: The transmission ratio maintains the original 6.6x speed increase, but the two-stage gear ratio was redistributed, unifying the module to 2.0, which improved the strength of the small gears.
The center distance was adjusted, gears were parametrically generated, and a gear train demo was printed, reducing tooth root stress by approximately 30%.
2. Sergiu's spool retainer did not achieve excellent mechanical performance.
We were inspired by bicycle external lock ring discs and redesigned the spool retainer, using a counter-lock + compression cap structure. This not only greatly improved dynamic balance but also made it easier to disassemble by hand.
2. Collected and analyzed the appearance of projectors, designing a split structure for new and old spools. The rewinder's structure was designed with reference to the quick-release fixing structure of caliper-brake bicycle rear wheels.
The new spool section essentially replicates a rear wheel, using off-the-shelf quick-release levers and 608 bearings to optimize resistance.
The worm gear section is decoupled for easier maintenance and replacement. It also uses limit stops to secure multiple main shafts, instead of Sergiu's insert shaft + circlip.
3. The retainer threads underwent 2 iterations of optimization during the 3D printing stage.
Materials: ABS-GF for the gear train to enhance mechanical properties, PLA-CF for the rewinder casing to reduce weight and improve stability, PETG for the base to lower costs, and PLA PRO for the rest to improve tolerance.
