Yaroslav the Wise was one of the greatest rulers of Kievan Rus. He ruled from 1019 to 1054 and greatly strengthened the state, developed culture, education, and international relations. His reign is often called the “Golden Age” of Kievan Rus.
Main Achievements of Yaroslav the Wise
1. Strengthening Kievan Rus
Yaroslav united the lands of Rus and strengthened the power of the state. During his reign, Kievan Rus became one of the largest and most influential countries in Europe.
2. Creation of the First Law Code — “Russkaya Pravda”
Under Yaroslav’s rule, the first collection of laws called Russkaya Pravda was created.
It:
- organized the legal system;
- protected private property;
- limited blood revenge;
- established punishments for crimes.
This was an important step in the development of law and statehood.
3. Development of Education and Culture
Yaroslav supported education by:
- opening schools at churches;
- encouraging the translation of books;
- creating one of the first large libraries at Saint Sophia Cathedral.
During his reign, chronicles, architecture, and art developed actively.
4. Construction of Saint Sophia Cathedral
One of the main symbols of his era became Saint Sophia Cathedral — an outstanding architectural monument and spiritual center of Rus. The Golden Gate of Kyiv and many churches were also built during his rule.
5. Expansion of International Relations
Yaroslav was called the “Father-in-law of Europe” because his children married members of royal families from France, Norway, Hungary, and other countries. This increased the international prestige of Kievan Rus.
6. Defense of the State
Yaroslav successfully fought against the Pechenegs. After defeating them in 1036, Kyiv became safer and continued to grow and develop.

The achievements of Yaroslav the Wise are very important for the history of Ukraine because he:
- strengthened the traditions of Ukrainian statehood;
