Description

I had a Deflect-O dryer vent cover for the exterior of my home, that just crumbled into nothingness (due to uv, water, temperature). I could have bout a $8 replacement, but instead I designed a better version of it I could print in a better material than the original. Maybe it will be helpful to you too.

The original box vent I replaced is about 150x150mm square with a 100mm diameter vent tube in the middle.

This design comes in 5 pieces:

  1. Vent box: This fits in the space where the original vent box sat. It has holes for the 3 shutters (the shutter holes closest to the edge should be on top), and 4 screw holes. Additionally, it has two little divots at the top and bottom so that its cover will slide in and hold itself in place.
  2. Vent box cover: This is a simple piece that is designed to give it a nice exterior look, snap into the box, and has some overlap with the surrounding material to keep stuff from coming in.
  3. The 3 shutters can be easily inserted into the box holes (you will need to flex them slightly to get them in). They are designed to be light and open up easily when the dryer is venting. You may need to take a knife and trim around the pivot ends of these to ensure they move smoothly in their positions.

Generally, printing was pretty simple. There is a solid block of support on the vent box, and you maybe able to find a better orientation for it. The vent shutters are probably the trickiest piece and you will need to trim off the brim. I screwed it in with 4 standard 2" wood screws.

I hope this helps someone out there! For me it was an interesting project I could knock out quickly.

It is a work in progress, but I hope to provide more information about my models, and some tips if you want to create your own.
