Beyond The Canvas: Frank Stella Tribute

Artist: Fixmeup

Inspiration: Frank Stella (1961)

Technique: Multi-color 3D printing with architectural finish

Dimensions: 220 x 220 mm (single piece)

The Artistic and Functional Concept

This collection is a three-dimensional reinterpretation of Frank Stella's Benjamin Moore series. In 1961, Stella stated: "What you see is what you see", defining the work as a final and unequivocal physical object. With this series, I wanted to honor that rigor while expanding its boundaries: through the use of 3D printing, I demonstrated that even if "what you see is what you see", three-dimensionality allows for the existence of infinite shadows and nuances. By elevating the white strips by 4mm, the work ceases to be static: the geometry interacts with the natural light of the room, changing its appearance at every moment of the day. Furthermore, this relief structure transforms the panels into acoustic diffusers, combining minimalist aesthetics with the functional need to reduce sound reverberation in domestic environments.

Technical Excellence and Finish

  • Hilbert Curve: All top surfaces are printed with the Hilbert Curve pattern at 98% density. This creates a matte, non-directional, and incredibly uniform texture, similar to an industrial sandblasted finish, which helps to break high-frequency sound waves.
  • Multi-color Precision: The design has been developed to be inclusive. Although optimized for AMS systems, the entire collection is perfectly printable on any 3D printer as color changes occur on a single layer (when transitioning from the base to the strips). Simply set a pause in the slicer at the correct height and proceed with manual filament change. The blend between colors is sharp and free of smudges, ensuring the geometric purity required by minimalism.
  • Floating Effect (Air-Gap): Each piece includes 18mm rear spacers. This allows the work to float on the wall, adding an additional spatial dimension, an elegant perimeter shadow, and a crucial air gap that improves acoustic performance.

The Complete Series (6 Pieces)

  • Delaware Crossing (Red)
  • New Madrid (Yellow)
  • Sabine Pass (Green)
  • Island No. 10 (Blue)
  • Hampton Roads (Orange)
  • Palmito Ranch (Purple/Black)

Printing Notes

  • Material: The use of PLA Matte is highly recommended to eliminate plastic reflections and achieve a gallery look.
  • Supports: Not necessary. The spacers are printed separately to ensure a perfect finish on every side.
  • Recommended Layout: For maximum impact, it is recommended to arrange the series with an 8-10 cm distance between the panels.
