Wooden Parametric Picture Frame (OpenSCAD)

Create a premium-looking picture frame that looks like REAL WOOD! This fully parametric OpenSCAD script generates an frame design featuring a wood-like texture and subtle detailing. It supports any size frame on any size printer, built-in hanging options, and optional customizable recessed gutters to embed your artwork and/or glass pane in the frame.

  • Fully customizable frame size (mm or inches)
  • Procedural wood grain texture
  • Auto-splitting into printable segments with dovetail connectors
  • Optional glass and artwork gutters
  • Integrated hanging screw slots

How To Use the Editor

Art Size (Width & Height)

  • art_width and art_height define the size of the artwork you want to frame.
  • You can switch between mm and inches using art_unit.
  • The frame automatically adjusts to fit your artwork.

Gutters

These settings control how your artwork and optional glass sit inside the frame:

  • Enable art_gutter to creates a gutter for your artwork to slot into the frame

    • art_gutter_d → how far inset from the edge (depth)
    • art_gutter_h → height of the gutter, should match your artworks thickness.

  • Enable glass_gutter to creates a gutter for a glass/acrylic panel to slot into the frame

    • glass_gutter_d → how far inset from the edge (depth)
    • glass_gutter_h → height of the gutter, should match your glass/acrylic panel thickness.

  • glass_offset defines the gap between artwork and glass/acrylic panel

Max Size (Important for Small or Large Printers)

max_size controls the maximum length of a single frame segment that fit's on your printer.
If your frame is larger than this, it will automatically split into multiple parts.

If your frame gets split into multiple part, make sure to right-click the model and choose split-to-parts in your slicer!

Slicing the Frame

All changes to the default settings are optional, but i recommend:

  • Change layer height to 0.2
  • Change infill to gyroid 15%

Assembly:

Add a drop of super glue in the dovetail holes and push firmly together.

Download the script for offline use

The OpenSCAD script is downloadable for offline use in the standalone editor to allow for local rendering. Please note the following regarding the source code:

  • Customization: All public parameters at the top of the script remain fully readable and adjustable
  • Obfuscation: The underlying logic has been obfuscated. While the script remains fully functional, it is not intended to be easily readable, reverse-engineered or modified beyonf the provided variables. Feel free to use the script to generate your own models, but please respect the effort put into the original logic by not attempting the de-obfuscate or redistribute the core code.
