Vented ant farm lid designed to improve air circulation and help control excess humidity inside the nest or foraging area.

I made it looking for a simple and safe solution: a lid that allows ventilation without leaving a large opening through which ants can escape. Instead of using fine mesh, the design uses solid and deep bars, which are more resistant and easier to print.

The separation between bars is approximately 0.4 mm, designed to hinder the escape of small ants. Even so, I always recommend testing with the species you intend to keep, as worker size can vary greatly.

The model is designed to be printed in a single piece and placed as a lid, cover, or ventilation module in ant farms, formicariums, foraging boxes, or small terrariums.

Features

  • Vented lid for ant farm or formicarium.
  • Approximate measurements: 178 × 78 × 7 mm.
  • Separation between bars: 0.4 mm.
  • Deep and solid bars.
  • Helps improve airflow.
  • Designed to reduce moisture accumulation.
  • No metal mesh needed.
  • Printable in a single piece.
  • Simple, resistant, and functional design.

Printing Recommendations

  • Recommended material: PLA+, PETG or PLA
  • Layer height: 0.16 mm or 0.20 mm
  • Walls: 3
  • Infill: 20–30 %
  • Supports: not necessary
  • Nozzle: 0.4 mm
  • Speed: moderate is better for clean bars

For very small ants, I recommend checking beforehand that they cannot pass through the actual gap left by your printer. The setting may vary depending on material, nozzle, flow, and calibration.

Note

This design is intended as an accessory for ventilation and humidity control. It does not replace proper inspection of the ant farm nor does it alone guarantee that it is escape-proof for all species.
