Description

Formula 1 2009 Front Wing | CFD-Optimized | Real FIA 2009 Regulations

Description:

Hi everyone! šŸ‘‹

I’m a young mechanical engineering student from Russia who built this highly detailed, CFD-optimized front wing for a 2009 Formula 1 car — fully compliant with the official FIA 2009 Technical Regulations.

This is not just a scale model. This is a real engineering project that includes serious aerodynamic development:

Key Features & Engineering Work:

  • Two-element main plane (main element + flap) based on high-downforce profiles (Selig S1223 + Eppler E423)
  • Optimized flap gap and overlap using multi-element wing theory (h = 3.5%c, L = 2.4%c)
  • Endplates with additional flow-control element (inspired by Gurney flap principles) to reduce wheel turbulence
  • Low nose design (Brawn GP / Renault R29 style) with mounting pylons
  • Exact central neutral section according to FIA Drawing 7
  • All geometry respects 2009 FIA Articles 3.7.1–3.7.8, 3.14, 3.17 and more

CFD Analysis Performed in Siemens STAR-CCM+:

  • Multiple design iterations with full 3D RANS simulations
  • Velocity 60 m/s (typical for front wing CFD testing)
  • Focused on maximizing Downforce (-CL) while keeping Drag (CD) under control
  • Studied flow separation, ground effect, tip vortices, and wake management
  • Goal: achieve realistic aerodynamic performance for a 2009-era front wing

This project helped me deeply understand ground-effect aerodynamics, multi-element wings, and professional CFD workflow.

Perfect For:

  • F1 enthusiasts and scale modelers
  • Engineering students & professionals building portfolios
  • Anyone who appreciates real aerodynamic design, not just aesthetics
  • Diorama and display builders
  • Scale: 1:2 (highly recommended) or 1:8

The model is fully split and optimized for 3D printing. At 1:10 scale it prints nicely on most modern printers (Bambu Lab, Prusa, Creality, etc.).

This project significantly strengthened my resume and gave me real hands-on experience with professional aerodynamic tools. If you're a student or engineer — print it, study it, improve it!
