The air in the caldera tasted of sulfur and iron, thick with the kind of heat that blistered the skin before the flame ever touched it. The expedition team had tracked the seismic tremors to the edge of the crater, expecting to find shifting tectonic plates. Instead, they found the source of the heat.
Standing amidst the jagged, cooling obsidian was a lone Cyndaquil. It wasn't the timid creature described in the field guides. As the dark rock crumbled beneath its feet, the flames erupting from its back flared blindingly bright, cutting through the ash and shadow of the mountain. It stood unbroken against the inferno, a living spark in the heart of the dead volcano.
The scene captures that exact, intense moment—the blinding flash of ignition against the stark, dark crust of the earth.
