Description

Parametric Lamella Lamp Shade — One File, Endless Shapes

A fully parametric lamp shade designed in Fusion 360 for the Parametric Home Decor Design Contest. Every shape you see in the gallery — from the slim pendant to the wide pumpkin, the hourglass table lamp, and the rainbow nursery light — comes from the same single design file. Just nine parameters drive the entire geometry, so you can dial in exactly the silhouette, size and light character you want before you hit print.

What Makes It Special

  • One file, infinite variations. Pendant lamp, table lamp, mood light, statement piece — change a few numbers, get a completely different lamp.
  • Only 4 unique parts to print. A lamella (printed 30 times), a top insert ring, a bayonet counter ring, and a bottom ring. That's it.
  • Smart bayonet assembly. The lamellas hook into the top insert ring; the counter ring twists on top with a bayonet lock to keep everything secure. No glue, no screws.
  • Fits standard sockets. Tested with IKEA E14 and E27 fixtures — the universal light_fixture_diameter parameter (10–58 mm) lets you adapt it to whatever fixture you already own.
  • Multicolor friendly. Print the lamellas in mixed colors for a playful, rainbow look (see the kids-room version in the gallery).

The 9 Parameters

The shape of the shade is driven by a 3-point spline along the silhouette: a top point, a middle point, and a bottom point. By moving these around and adjusting their tangents, you get bell shapes, lanterns, hourglasses, pumpkins, and everything in between.

ParameterWhat it doesRange

Howe to Use It on MakerWorld

You don't need Fusion 360 to customize the shade. The Fusion file is uploaded so MakerWorld's parametric customizer can read it — adjust the parameters directly in your browser, then download the ready-to-print model. A pre-configured 3MF with a print profile is also included if you just want to print one of the example shapes right away.

Print Settings

  • Material: PLA, 0.2 mm layer height
  • Supports: none required for any part
  • Lamellas (important!):
    • Enable brim ears on both ends to keep the long, thin part flat on the build plate
    • Set the top/bottom surface pattern to Concentric — this reduces print time
  • Insert ring, counter ring, bottom ring: standard settings, nothing special

You'll print 30 lamellas plus the three rings per shade.

Assembly

  1. Hook the top of each lamella into the top insert ring.
  2. Twist the counter ring on top with the bayonet lock — this holds the lamellas in place so they can't slip out.
  3. Clip the bottom of each lamella into the bottom ring.
  4. Mount on your fixture and enjoy.

Design Notes

The lamella_one_side_angle is a small but powerful detail: at 0° you get evenly spaced gaps and a bright, airy light; turning it up to 12° makes each lamella wider on one side, narrowing the gaps and giving you a much softer, more focused glow — useful if the bare bulb feels too bright in your room.

If you build something with this design, I'd love to see it. Make it yours — and have fun playing with the parameters.

AI Disclosure

In the spirit of transparency: the 3D model itself was designed entirely by me in Fusion 360 — no AI was involved in the geometry, the parametric setup, the bayonet mechanism, or any other engineering aspect of the product.

AI tools were used only for:

  • Cover image composition — generated with Google Gemini to showcase the design variants in a polished presentation.
  • Description text — drafted with the help of an AI assistant based on my notes, parameters and design intent, then reviewed and edited by me.

The design work, parameter logic, print testing and assembly are 100% human-made.
