Description
Princess Olga of Kyiv was one of the most important and influential rulers of early Eastern Europe. She lived in the 10th century and was the wife of Prince Igor of Kyiv.
After her husband was killed by the Drevlians, Olga became the ruler (regent) of Kievan Rus on behalf of her young son, Sviatoslav. She is especially famous for her clever and harsh revenge against the Drevlians, which is described in medieval chronicles.
Olga is also known for her significant role in spreading Christianity. She was the first ruler of Kievan Rus to convert to Christianity, traveling to Constantinople where she was baptized. Her conversion laid the foundation for the later Christianization of the state by her grandson, Vladimir the Great.
Princess Olga is remembered as a wise and strong leader who strengthened the state’s administration and established new systems of tribute collection. For her contributions to Christianity, she was later canonized as a saint by the Orthodox Church.
Today, she is honored as one of the key historical figures in the history of Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
