Description

360° Rotating T-Virus Lamp

Bring a piece of sci-fi to life with this upgraded T-Virus Lamp, featuring a fully rotating helix encased in a sleek acrylic tube. This version builds on my previous popular design with major improvements that make it both easier to assemble and far more visually striking.

The rotating helix creates the illusion of an “active” virus sample, driven by an upgraded motor system for smooth 360° motion. Lighting has also been completely reworked—rather than threading LEDs through the spiral (which was tricky and time-consuming), a COB LED strip is now housed in the inner core, giving a brighter, more even glow while making installation simple and frustration-free.

This model is larger than the original, designed to house a full AA battery pack for a completely self-contained, wire-free setup—perfect for display pieces, desks, or even cosplay use. The proportions are chunkier and more balanced, giving it a much more premium presence.

Assembly is straightforward, using a combination of screws and press-fit parts. The design incorporates common maker components including a motor, switch, potentiometer (for speed control), COB light strip, acrylic tube, bearings, and a battery box. A rear button powers the unit, while a dial lets you adjust the helix rotation speed. The base also features a screw cap for quick and easy battery changes.

The Umbrella-style logos on the top and base can be printed in multi-color for a high-detail finish, or printed separately and inserted to save time. Total print time is efficient, with minimal supports required.

One key improvement from the previous version: the helix parts now print much more reliably. They’ve been redesigned with a built-in ring for better bed adhesion, making them far easier to print—even for less experienced users.

For best visual effect, the helix looks fantastic in glow-in-the-dark filament (blue/green recommended), while the inner core works best in white or other light/translucent materials to maximize the lighting effect.

This project was a blast to bring to life, and I hope you enjoy building and displaying it just as much.

If you make one, be sure to share your photos—I genuinely love seeing your creations!
