Description

Version 4.5A of my magnet couplings for dust collection.

Like the previous Version, purpose is to be able to quick-switch dust collection from one machine to another without tools.

There are many different sizes aviable, should you miss one let me know.

Pick the right size for your hose/machine, glue in magnets (4-8 depending on diameter of the coupling) size 12x3 mm and use a hose clamp to secure the coupling to your hose/machine.

Mounting the Magnets is easier than before:

They are now pushed in from the side and only secured with a small dot of glue to prevent them from falling out. By alternating magnetsides (1-2-1-2-1-2) you do not have to worry about the direction, just make sure you always use this pattern or it will not work. Alternatively you can place all magnets in one direction and check if you did so correctly before securing the magnet with a small dot of glue in the slot. I use cyanacrylat gel. If you need to take out a glued in magnet, carefully break the glue with a knife and push the magnet out by inserting an allen key into the hole inside the coupling ring.

To find the right size click in a part and look at the name. There are couplings for your hose, your machine and pipes. The numbers relate to size in mm meaning the “MKA4.5A-hoseCoupling 80” is for your hose and will fit a hose with 80 mm inner diameter, “MKA4.5A-machineCoupling 100” will fit a machine that is equipped with a 100 mm dustport. Additionally the new version has different sizes to help a bigger hose connect to a smaller machine port: “MKA4.5A-machineCoupling 100 120” means its an adapter to connect an 120 mm hose to an 100 mm machine dust port.

The hose coupling gets screwed into the hose end and the machine coupling is designed to attatch to a machine port by using a hose clamp. If your dust ports are very smooth you can try using rough paper tape or grip/ anti-slip tape on the port. The pipe coupling is needed if you have a pipe that you want to connect a hose to. The inner diameter has to be about the number of the coupling, the part that connects to the pipe is slightly tapered, so you have a bit of room should the pipe not fit perfectly. Once the coupling is pushed all the way into the pipe you use a strong tape all around the pipe and coupling to connect the two. I like to use 40-50 mm (~3/2 - 2 inch) wide electric tape as it grips well and stretches a bit so you van get a really tight fit. And there you go, your magnet coupling system is ready for use.

Lastly 75 mm is about 3 inches, 100 mm is about 4 inches, 125 mm is about 5 inches and 150 mm is about 6 inches. Ports usually have a bit of play and the machine coupling can bend a bit. Try one before you print all you need, let me know if you have trouble with the fit.

I added N35 magnets that should fit, if you use heavy duty hoses you may need to go up to N45-50. The magnets sould have a thight fit but go in without too much force, if not see down below.

Print settings:

  • 0,2 mm layer hight, important for fit
  • 7 walls for mostly solid and rigid parts, you can increase or decrease depending on your needs
  • Use PLA for ease of print and PETG for more robust couplings. PETG works better for the machine couplings as the stiff pla can break off parts of the clamping mechanism if to much force is used.

Trouble shooting:

  • if you have trouble with the right direction of the magnets you can also alternate: 1-2-1-2-1-2 this way you will always have the direction right as the right poles will pull each other in. Do NOT 1-1-2-2-1-2 / 1-1-2-1-2-2 /…
  • magnets dont fit: check size, they must be 12x3 mm or smaller. The fans can also cause the print to shrink - maybe you have to turn down aux and part fan.
